Equality in America

Equality is not a reality in the American society, and the government has complete control over it. Many Americans treat people differently on the basis of their race, clothing styles, and the amount of money that they have. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream that one day blacks could have freedom. He believed that all men were created equal. One ideal of American Democracy was expressed in King’s words by, “I have a dream that one day my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.” King’s meaning of that was people must accept each other for who they are on the inside than what they represent on the outside. Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968 trying to fight for equality. Many Americans to this day will remember King for what he did for them.

Since the government gave black males the same rights as the white males, then the women should get the rights as the men. If women have the power physically and emotionally then the women should have a chance to do the same jobs as the men. Women of America are treated differently because they are women. To be able to improve the educational and the employment opportunities for women then, affirmative action should be used. Some Americans think that this program is not nessessary because we should judge by what we can do, not by the color of our skin. One strong opponent of affirmative action is Clarence Thomas, the only African American on the Supreme Court. He believes that you can accomplish anything that you want according to your qualification and skills.

The government is not giving equal rights to the women of America. It is scared that women will take over. They need to open up their eyes. It is the 90’s and almost a new millenium.
